Café Deux (Meguro)

Recently I’ve been looking more for simple small places serving amazing coffee and feeling genuine with quiet atmosphere and jazz music. Tokyo is full of little treasures… So today let me bring you to a cute intimate café, well hidden in a tiny street near-by the Meguro train station. I guess I found my new “coffee & reading” spot…

Deux (ドゥー)
Since 1972 (showa 47)
Smoking
No WI-FI & no power outlets
Quiet to a little bit lively, mostly regular customers
Recommendation: Café deux blend (ドゥーブレンド)
Japanese Menu
Perfect for couples or alone
We love: amazing coffee, sitting at the counter, jazz music
Special points: delightful owner/barista, the tables near the window
Drink prices: 450-800 yen

The first time I came here was mostly because I had an appointment with my dermatologist in Meguro and I actually arrived really early so I had plenty of time before going to the clinic. I suddenly remembered that a while ago I bookmarked this place on my Google map, thinking I should give it a try when I’ll be around. Perfect occasion to do so!
Seriously, I had a tough time to find it… But I finally managed to get in the tiny street where you can find the building entrance and the stairs leading to the café. Honestly, it took me something like 15 minutes, I was walking around like a crazy person, I’m surprised no one called the police, because I was probably really weird!

Hesitantly I pushed the door of this small café with barely 20 seats and few regular customers. I really felt like going into their privacy. I’m pretty sure it feels like home for few of them.

I sat near the window, a perfect spot for me. I enjoyed a subdued lighting even if I was next to a very large window. This place is such a cute date spot with its intimate atmosphere… You can’t imagine having a loud chitchat there, it’s more about whispering to your lover’s ear…
Few salary men busy with their phone were drinking coffee, another customer was chatting in low voice with the owner and the ojisan sitting on the table next to mine was smoking while reading his newspaper. Everyone seemed to be in their own bubble… Except maybe this nice ojisan with his newspaper who asked me if I was American. I told him that I was French and he told me that he really hates Americans but likes French because we made beautiful movies. He added that when he was younger he always saw a beautiful French woman on TV and really liked her a lot. I’m really wondering who it was… I should have ask ! I didn’t think about asking because I was too surprised by the conversation… Anyway… He was very sweet so I enjoyed talking a little bit with him.

I choose the special blend coffee from the café (450 yen) and really liked it. It was hard for me to pick up something from the menu; there were so many kinds of coffee (Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala…) and a lot of « arranged coffee » too (Vienna coffee, café au lait etc…). Actually I counted 20 coffee-based drinks! And I’m not even talking about the hot chocolate, tea and banana juice…

I also noted few things to eat : mini gratin, croque-monsieur and soup (each was 450 yen) but also a cheesecake for 350 yen. Too bad for me the cheesecake was sold out and I didn’t have enough time before my appointment to eat something anyway…

I really loved relaxing there and actually came back the week after and sat at the counter, drinking a café au lait while reading. I really recommend this place if you’re looking for a quiet place to read while enjoying an amazingly good coffee.
