Kaffa Bunna (Roppongi)
Roppongi is sometimes underrated when it comes to kissaten. However, there are few nice places around that didn’t change for decades. Kaffa Bunna is one of those. I came here few times and I fully enjoyed every time. Even if I tend to like kitsch and extravagant kissaten a lot, this kind of simple cute kissaten always warms my heart.

Kissaten Overview
-
- The place feels like a home sweet home. This kissaten is in a mansion (in japan « mansion » is used to designate a concrete apartment/condominium complex of three or more floors) and you’ll literally feel like entering someone’s place. It’s a little bit hard to find the entrance, so spot the sign and climb the stairs.
-
- The owner is extremely cute and happy to talk with customers. He was very curious about 2 foreigners coming there and thought that we got lost. I told him that I found his place after reading an article on Enjoy Tokyo and he was extremely surprised. He explained me that the kissaten is named after Ethiopian words: Cafa (coffee beans) and Bunna (Ethiopia), because Ethiopia is the born place of coffee. It’s so adorable!
-
- The coffee choice is really interesting, from 3 kinds of blend coffee (630 yen) to straight high quality coffee such as blue mountain (1470 yen) or colombia (950 yen). You can also get nice arranged coffee: cappuccino (900 yen), Turkish coffee (1050 yen) etc… If you have a sweet tooth and like to enjoy something sweet with your coffee, there are 4 delicious cakes (450 to 550 yen)
-
- The decoration is not extravagant but even if there is no red velvet comfy seats or kitsch stained glass, it’s still cozy and makes you feel like staying here for hours. Antique lamps, dark color woodcrafts, plaster walls, flowers… You can even see beans used for straight coffee in storage jars behind the counter.
-
- This place is super quiet and peaceful, with nice background music, so it’s not the place you would choose to have long talk with your friend. The atmosphere is perfect if you’re by yourself and want to relax or read. My friend joked about how this place was the perfect place for illegitimate couples to meet in secret. I couldn’t help but think it was actually true… The perfect spot for a secret forbidden romance.
-
- Even if I really love sitting at counter and chatting with the master, the table next to the kind of patio door is the best spot according to me. It has a nice lightening coming from outside. End of afternoon’s sun made it really perfect… Too bad I couldn’t take a picture as a couple was sitting there and I really didn’t want to disturb them.
-
- The music is very important here, I never found a kissaten playing music from old American movies before that one. The owner has a passion for old music and knows a lot about it, I’m happy he can convey his passion in his kissaten.
Tips
-
- Coffee here is really good but if you’re not that much into caffeine you can have a very good cocoa (950 yen), rich and creamy but not too sweet.
-
- Cheesecake (450 yen) and Bavarois (550 yen) are homemade, give it a try.
-
- From noon to 2 pm, blend coffee and café au lait (ice or hot) are only 490 yen.
-
- 2 times a month the kissaten is holding a kind of « nostalgic music » event; for 1000 yen you can enjoy coffee, sweets and, a carefully selected playlist of old music.
- If you’re using Tokyo Metro Subway, the exit 2 is the closest one to reach the kissaten from Roppongi station.
Ice café au lait because it’s getting warm outside…
The wood carving sign is really cute…
